New Nuclear Dumps—Voices from Texas and New Mexico Telebriefing
The telebriefing focused on the current action by the nuclear industry in concert with members of Congress to change national policies on highly radioactive nuclear waste. The industry’s goal is to get rid of their most concentrated and deadly waste before there is a permanent storage solution for it by sending it to communities in Texas and New Mexico. It is called “Centralized Interim Storage,” but since there is no insurance that if moved, the waste will move again, we call this a “Parking Lot Dump” plan.
The briefing included the following presenters:
- Rose Gardner lives near two parking lot dump storage sites about 20 miles from each other–Waste Control Specialists in Texas, and Holtec in New Mexico. The Holtec license process is currently moving forward.
- Leona Morgan works with a network of new and seasoned activists in New Mexico to stop the Holtec proposal.
- Dr. Marvin Resnikoff, a leading expert on the shipment of nuclear waste will speak about the dangers of nuclear waste transport.
- Diane D’Arrigo, the Radioactive Waste Project Director for NIRS, has been providing support to the STOP CIS / No Waste Aqui movements in Texas and New Mexico.
