PROTEST YUCCA MOUNTAIN NUKE WASTE DUMP!
WHAT: protest against the Yucca Mtn. nuclear waste dump
WHEN: 11:00 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 6th (the press conference starts at 11:30 a.m. inside, but we want to be there early, even at 11 a.m., so we can be seen by media and participants entering event!)
!QW!: US Chamber of Commerce, 1615 H St., NW (near McPherson Square Metro, walk one block south towards the White House, turn right on H Street and walk west)
WHY: Former Republican New Hampshire Governor John Sununu is holding a press conference to promote shipping tens of thousands of high-level nuclear waste trucks and trains through 45 States past the homes of 50 million Americans in order to dump it at a leaky earthquake zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada against the will of the Western Shoshone Indian Nation, whose homeland it is as affirmed by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley which the US government signed.
Dear Friends,
Hello. Lisa Gue at Public Citizen sent out the e-mail below. The US Chamber of Commerce, at the nuclear power industry’s urging, has launched a high profile pro Yucca Mtn dump campaign. They’ve hired former Republican NH Governor John Sununu and former Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro as their celebrity spokespeople. Tomorrow they’re holding a press conference with Sununu here in D.C., so we’re trying to pull together a protest out front. We hope to highlight the Western Shoshone Indian perspective, as well as risks of transporting high-level nuclear waste through 45 States past the homes of 50 million Americans to bury it in a leaky earthquake zone! Hope you can join us, and please forward this e-mail and spread the word! Thanks! We’ll make lots of signs to hand out, but folks should feel free to bring their own if they’re inspired to make one. We’ll have the press release Lisa’s writing to hand out to passersby, as well as comment cards to the Dept. of Energy opposing Yucca. We will also invite media to join us outside to hear our side of the issue after the press conference finishes inside.

Yucca Mountain Defenders:
I think we need to show up at this press conference – a few people outside with signs and information and a few people inside to be “briefed” and to had out press releases. Please let me know if you’re interested and can come (or if someone else from you group can come). We need to show some opposition to this ridiculous effort to use celebrities to sell the Yucca Mountain plan. I’ll write a press release. The Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth has Nuclear Energy Institute (as well as the Chamber of Commerce) on its board. Thanks. -Lisa Gue, Public Citizen
