The Wisconsin Assembly on Tuesday approved a bill that would lift Wisconsin’s current moratorium on building new nuclear reactors in the state.
There is simply no compelling reason to do so. It’s not like we’ll suddenly see large new reactors going up across the state–not when reactors like Kewaunee have closed because they are no longer economically competitive. Rather, the push to end the moratorium is primarily ideological: it’s intended to send a signal across the country that there is new support for nuclear power–even when there really isn’t.
But the pro-nuclear push could have a very dangerous side effect: with Yucca Mountain off the table, it could put Wisconsin at the top of the list for a national high-level radioactive waste dump.
This unnecessary and dangerous legislation can be defeated. Please send an e-mail to your state senators below urging them to keep the moratorium.
